Filters in your home can be categorized us:

1) Mechanical Filters
2) Electrostatic Filters

Mechanical Air Filters are the most common type of air filters used in residential HVAC systems. Such filters use synthetic fibers to trap small particles, pollens, debris, and dust and prevent those things from circulating in our home and getting into our lungs.

The effectiveness of mechanical air filter is measured in MERV Rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Generally speaking, the quality of the filter corresponds to the MERV value of the filter. The higher the quality the higher the MERV value and the higher the price. In other words, you get for what you pay for. Air filters with lower MERV ratings need to be replaced more frequently.

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) is an industry standard which measures the effectiveness of air filters. Higher MERV rating simply means finer the filtration becomes. With finer filtration, much fewer airborne contaminates & dust particles are allowed to pass through the filter. The most common "Airborne Contaminates" that these filters are tested include dust mites, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, tobacco smoke and bacteria. MERV ratings ranges from M1-M20, but MERV 8-13 are the most common for residential applications. On the other hand, MERV 14-20 are typically common to commercial applications like hospitals.

Electrostatic air filters clean the air by using static electricity. When the electrostatic charge is generated by the air flowing through a maze of static prone fibers the airborne particles are attracted and held by the static charge. Electrostatic filters are washable and can be considered permanent filters. Electrostatic air filters are up to 10 times more efficient than standard disposable furnace filters. It is recommended to wash your electrostatic filters every 2-3 months.

Home Comfort Air Services replaces and upgrades your existing filter to a higher MERV filter or Electrostatic filter. Contact us at (240) 345-9899
